Medical Psychiatry Alliance Governance

Dr. Benoit Mulsant leads and manages the MPA in the position of Executive Director, while reporting to the Executive Committee and working with the MPA’s Advisory Council (MPA-AC). MPA-AC is a collaborative, constructive and innovative group that steers improvement in the delivery of high-quality, patient-centered care. The MPA Management Committee continues to meet monthly and reports to the MPA Executive Committee through the MPA Executive Director.

Medical Psychiatry Alliance Executive Director

Dr. Benoit Mulsant is the Executive Director of the Medical Psychiatry Alliance, as well as Professor and Chair of the Department of Psychiatry at the University of Toronto. He is also an Adjunct Professor of Psychiatry at the University of Pittsburgh. He is a practicing geriatric psychiatrist and has been listed in Best Doctors in America and Best Doctors in Canada.

Dr. Mulsant’s scientific work has focused on the treatment of late-life mental disorders. He has authored and co-authored more than 350 peer-reviewed journal articles and more than 50 book chapters and invited publications. Over the past 20 years, he has been an investigator on grants with external funding totaling more than $100M in direct costs (including more than $40M as principal investigator or team leader).

Medical Psychiatry Alliance Director, Operations & Planning

Kirk LeMessurier is the Director, Operations & Planning for the Medical Psychiatry Alliance. He is also the Director of Corporate Planning & Strategy for the Centre for Addiction and Mental Health.

Medical Psychiatry Alliance Program Directors 

The MPA Program Directors are leading various research programs to affect innovations in patient care and in the education of health care practitioners. Their teams will work with all collaborative MPA sites to test, refine and validate new and innovative models of care to assess how well new MPA initiatives are achieving the vision and mission of the MPA, and how they will benefit patients.

Dr. Antonio Pignatiello is the MPA Director of Child and Youth Health and Family Services. Under his guidance, SickKids has already introduced the MPA Child and Youth Health clinical, research and education plans to community partners, and his team is now identifying which projects and community partnerships will help move the mandate of the MPA forward. Dr. Pignatiello is also the Associate Psychiatrist-in-Chief at SickKids.

Dr. Paul Kurdyak is the MPA Director of Health Outcomes. Dr. Kurdyak is leading the analysis of the impact of integrated care on patient outcomes, with an emphasis on system-level impact using data from the Institute for Clinical Evaluative Sciences, and research methods. Dr. Kurdyak is also Director of Health Systems Research at CAMH.

Dr. Rose Geist is the MPA Director of Collaborative Care. Dr. Geist is developing new methods to treat patients with both mental and physical illness based on the emerging facts of efficiency in the outpatient, inpatient, and telepsychiatry settings connected with each of the clinical sites of the MPA.

Dr. Robert Maunder is the Interim MPA Director of Body – Brain Integration. In this role, he will be leading research on the linkages between mental and physical health. Dr. Maunder is also a Professor of Psychiatry at the University of Toronto and the Head of Research at Mount Sinai Hospital's Department of Psychiatry. His research focuses on stress, resilience, and the interpersonal determinants of physical health.

Dr. Sanjeev Sockalingam is the MPA Director of Curriculum Renewal. Dr. Sockalingam will enable transformation of curriculum in U of T’s Undergraduate Medical Education program, and help to design, develop, implement, and evaluate medical school curriculum supporting the MPA initiative in U of T’s MD program. Dr. Sockalingam is also the Director of Continuing Practice and Professional Development at the University of Toronto.
