The MPA extends a warm welcome to Dr. Peter Selby, Director of Medical Education and Clinician Scientist at The Centre for Addiction and Mental Health (CAMH), as he joins the MPA Brain-Heart Initiative. The Brain-Heart Initiative is currently a pilot program integrating primary care and specialized resources in the community in order to identify and manage weight-change and other medical issues of patients with severe mental illness.

Dr. Selby, who is also a Professor in the Departments of Family and Community Medicine, Psychiatry and Public Health Sciences at the University of Toronto, has devoted his career to behaviour change in the addictions realm especially in treating those with severe tobacco use disorders. Within the MPA’s mandate, he will now work with Dr. Valerie Taylor to apply these concepts to other health behaviours that impact health outcomes of patients with mental illness.

In addition, Dr. Selby leads the STOP and TEACH programs, which are scalable, technology-driven implementation models for integrated competency building and treatment of addiction and mental health in primary and community-care settings across Ontario.

"This work makes him an ideal MPA partner," says Dr. Benoit Mulsant, Executive Director of the MPA and Professor and Chair of the Departmenr of Psychiatry at the University of Toronto. "We are excited to work with Dr. Selby in the exploration of these platforms to mitigate health behaviours reducing life expectancy in patients with mental illness."
